Mock exam · 25 questions · 80% to pass

Sit the Colorado permit test before you book it

A mock exam is scored exactly the way the state scores the real thing: 25 questions drawn from the Colorado Driver Handbook, and 80 percent to pass. What it cannot do is tell you which 25 questions you will get, and any site that claims otherwise is selling something. What it does do is show you which chapters you are weak in, while there is still time to read them.

The scoring rules, exactly as the state sets them

  • Passing score: 80% — 20 of 25 Set in rule: a correct score of 80% or higher is required to pass.

Mock exam versus the twelve practice sets

The practice sets are fixed, which means you can stop halfway and come back to the same questions, and each one leans on a topic so you can target a weakness. A mock exam is the opposite: it draws 25 fresh questions from all 150 in the bank, mixes the topics in the proportions the state uses, and does not tell you what any question is testing. Use the sets to learn and the mock exam to find out whether the learning transferred. If you are scoring well on the fixed sets and poorly on random draws, the gap is not knowledge, it is that you had started recognising the questions.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Colorado knowledge test scored?

You answer twenty-five multiple-choice questions and need twenty correct to pass, which is eighty percent. There is no partial credit and no penalty for a wrong answer, so an unanswered question and a wrong one cost the same.

Is there a time limit?

The online version allows sixty minutes, which is generous for twenty-five questions. Office tests are not run against a fixed clock, but you should still finish well inside an hour.

What languages can I take it in?

English and Spanish only, in the office and online. If you need another language you may bring an interpreter aged sixteen or over with a valid licence, or request an accommodation from the state.

How is a mock exam different from the real test?

The scoring is identical: twenty-five questions, eighty percent. The difference is that a mock exam explains every answer, which the real one does not, and a mock exam cannot tell you which questions the state will draw. Treat the score as a readiness signal, not a prediction.

How many times can I take the real test?

As many times as you need, but only twice in one day, and each retake carries an eleven dollar fifty state fee. Third-party paper testing is capped at four attempts, after which you test at a state office.
