Twelve Colorado permit practice sets

Every set is twenty-five questions, the same length as the state knowledge test, and every set is fixed rather than shuffled so you can leave halfway through and come back to the same questions. The sets are not twelve copies of the same mix: eight of them lean on one topic each, and the remaining four change the difficulty or the order instead. All three hundred question slots are drawn from the same Colorado handbook the state tests from, and every answer on every set links through to a page that explains why the other three options are wrong.

How to work through them

Start with set one and take it cold, before you open the handbook, so the score tells you something real. Then spend your time on the focused set for whichever topic cost you the most points rather than grinding through sets in order. Leave the hard set until you have done four or five others, because it is written to distinguish memorisation from understanding and it is discouraging as a starting point. Finish with set twelve, which is the closest thing on this site to the real exam: same proportions, mixed difficulty, no signposting. If you are scoring twenty-three or better there, you are ready to book.

Other ways to practise

  • Timed mock exam — twenty-five random questions scored against the real eighty percent pass line.
  • Road sign gallery — every sign drawn out with what it requires and how it gets misread.
  • Cheat sheets — four one-page summaries for the night before.
