How a question gets written

Every question follows the same five steps, and a question that fails any step does not get published.

  • Pick the rule. A specific, testable rule from a named chapter of the official handbook. Vague topics like "safe driving" are not allowed as a source line.
  • Rewrite it as a question. Written in our own words, in a situation a driver would actually face — not a definition recital. Handbook text is never copied verbatim.
  • Write four plausible options. Wrong options must be wrong for a specific, explainable reason. Absurd filler options are rejected.
  • Write the explanation. Why the correct answer is right, why each wrong option is wrong, and a real-world example. Minimum length is enforced by an automated build check.
  • Record the source. Every question carries a sourceRef naming the handbook chapter, the reviewer, and the review date. A question with no source is not published.

Why we never copy the handbook

Federal government works enter the public domain automatically under 17 U.S.C. §105. State government works do not. Reproducing a state driver handbook's question or explanation text is a copyright problem, not a shortcut.

It is also worse studying. A copied question rewards recognition; a rewritten one rewards comprehension. The real exam will phrase things differently from any practice bank, so only comprehension transfers.

Review and publication states

Content moves through three states before it reaches you: draft, reviewed, then published. Only published content appears in the sitemap, is linked from other pages, or is served without a noindex tag. This is enforced by an automated check that fails the build if a draft page slips through.

Reviewer

Ethan Wen — Web developer. I built this site so anyone can learn the driving rules for free, understand them properly, and get their license sooner. Every question comes from the official Colorado Driver Handbook (DR 2337, January 2025) — rewritten in my own words and checked line by line. Not a licensed driving instructor, and not affiliated with the Colorado DMV.

No invented credentials. A byline on this site is a real person with the qualifications actually stated, and nothing more.

Advertising and editorial separation

If advertising is enabled, ad placement is decided by layout, never by content. No advertiser influences which answer is correct, which topics are covered, or how a question is worded. Nothing on the site is sponsored content, and we accept no payment for placement or links.

Corrections

Driving rules change and handbooks are reissued. If you find an error — a wrong answer, an outdated rule, a broken source link — tell us via the contact page. Corrections are logged with the date applied and the handbook edition that triggered them.

Sources

All Colorado content on this site is derived from the following official publications. Links go directly to the agency's own files.

Handbook editions are reissued without notice. If the agency publishes a new edition, affected questions are re-checked against it and the retrieval date above is updated.
