Before you book

Pre-register online before anything else, because it produces the confirmation you need at the counter and it saves a substantial amount of time at the appointment. Finish whatever driver education your age group requires and keep the completion certificate, since certificates expire and a lapsed one means rescheduling. If you plan to test online through the at-home option, do that first and bring the pass confirmation to the appointment; passing online does not remove the need to appear in person to have the permit issued.

Documents to bring

Bring proof of identity such as a passport or a certified birth certificate, and understand that a school identification card on its own is not accepted. Bring your Social Security number or documentation showing you are not eligible for one. Bring two documents proving a Colorado residential address. If you are under eighteen, bring a parent or guardian because the Affidavit of Liability has to be signed, and if you have no government identification of your own they must also sign an Affidavit of Identity and bring certified proof of guardianship.

At the counter

Documents are checked before testing, so a missing paper ends the appointment before it starts. Then comes a basic vision screening, so bring glasses or contacts if you wear them and put them on for it. After the knowledge test, assuming you pass, the same visit covers the photograph, fingerprints, and payment. Arrive about ten minutes early, because late arrivals lose the slot and rebooking can mean waiting days.

Inside the test

Twenty-five questions, and eighty percent is the pass line, so you can afford to miss five. Read every option before choosing, because the exam deliberately puts a plausible answer before the correct one. The online version allows an hour, which is far more time than most people need, so use the spare minutes to reread the two questions you were unsure about rather than finishing early. Nothing on the test requires calculation; if you find yourself doing arithmetic, reread the question.

If you do not pass

Failing is recoverable and common. You can test again, but only twice in one day, and each retake carries an eleven dollar fifty state fee. If your first attempt was a paper test at a third-party provider and you missed more than half the questions, you must wait until the next day. Third-party paper testing is capped at four attempts in total, after which further tests have to be taken at a state driver license office. Use the gap to review the explanations rather than to take the test again immediately.

Once you have the permit

The permit is valid for three years or until your twenty-first birthday. You must drive with a licensed driver aged twenty-one or over in the front passenger seat at all times, and if you are under eighteen you must hold the permit a full twelve months before applying for a licence and complete the supervised driving log. Practise in the conditions you will actually be tested in rather than only in daylight on quiet streets, because the driving test expects competence in traffic, at night, and in bad weather.

The four days before the appointment

Spacing beats cramming for this material because almost all of it is rule application rather than recall. On the first day take one full practice set cold and write down the topics you missed. On the second, read only the handbook chapters for those topics and then take the focused set for the worst one. On the third day take the hard set and accept that it will feel worse than the others, because it is written to separate memorisation from understanding. On the last day do nothing new: reread the test day sheet, pack the documents, and stop studying in the evening so you arrive rested rather than exhausted.
