Road signs · easy

You are approaching a five-sided sign shaped like the profile of a house, coloured fluorescent yellow-green. What category of warning does this shape mark?

  1. A A school zone or school crossing, which this shape is reserved for Correct
  2. B A railway crossing, which uses house-shaped signs to stand out at distance
  3. C A no-passing zone, marked by the pentagon instead of a pennant
  4. D A hospital or emergency services location nearby

Why A is correct

The pentagon shape is reserved exclusively for school-related warnings: advance school zone signs, school crossings and school area speed limits. The fluorescent yellow-green version is the modern standard, chosen because that colour is visible at dusk and against cluttered urban backgrounds better than the older yellow. Shape is the primary carrier of meaning in the sign system, and the pentagon is one of the shapes you can identify from silhouette alone, which is the whole point: by the time you can read the words, you should already know what family of instruction is arriving.

Why the other options are wrong

B. A railway crossing, which uses house-shaped signs to stand out at distance
Railway crossings use the round yellow advance sign and the white crossbuck at the track itself. Their shapes are circle and X, deliberately distinct from the pentagon so that the two high-stakes warnings can never be confused at a glance.
C. A no-passing zone, marked by the pentagon instead of a pennant
The no-passing zone is marked by the pennant, the sideways-pointing triangle mounted on the left of the road. The pentagon and the pennant both break the diamond-and-rectangle pattern, which is why confusing the two shapes is a favourite test question.
D. A hospital or emergency services location nearby
Hospitals and emergency services are marked with blue service signs, which are rectangular guidance signs rather than warnings. Nothing about emergency services uses the pentagon silhouette.

On the road

Driving a school route at 7:40 in February darkness, you pick up the pentagon by its shape alone, a half block before the words resolve: two children at the crossing, an adult with a flag beside them. The silhouette told you to slow while the sign was still a grey blur, which is exactly the job the shape was chosen to do.
