Safe driving · medium

Another driver cuts you off, gestures angrily, and then begins following you closely. What is the safest response?

  1. A Slow slightly and gesture back, so they know you are not intimidated
  2. B Do not respond, avoid eye contact, and head for a public place or police station if they keep following Correct
  3. C Brake firmly to discourage the tailgating
  4. D Pull over immediately and settle it verbally

Why B is correct

Nothing you can do by way of reply improves this situation, and several available replies make it worse. Gesturing back prolongs the engagement and confirms that this is now an interaction; braking firmly amounts to manufacturing a collision and can be charged accordingly. The productive move is withdrawal: no response, no eye contact through the mirror, and a change of destination from wherever you were going to somewhere with people in it. Another driver's anger is not negotiable from inside a moving car, and stepping out removes the one protective factor working in your favour.

Why the other options are wrong

A. Slow slightly and gesture back, so they know you are not intimidated
Answering a gesture confirms to the other driver that something is now in progress. It extends an episode that would otherwise have ended within half a minute.
C. Brake firmly to discourage the tailgating
Braking to teach someone a lesson is a deliberate crash whose outcome is decided by mass and reaction time. It is also treated legally as exactly the aggression it is.
D. Pull over immediately and settle it verbally
Leaving the vehicle trades a steel shell for a conversation with somebody already demonstrating poor judgement. If you must stop, stop where other people are.

On the road

One driver lets it go, turns toward a busy garage rather than home, and never learns what the other person wanted. A second driver gestures back, gets brake-checked, and spends the evening writing an insurance statement. Nothing about the first version is satisfying in the moment. Nothing about the second version stops being expensive.
