Regulatory signs

No left turn

Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site

What it means

This sign prohibits left turns at the intersection or entrance it governs. The restriction exists where a left turn would cross too much conflicting traffic, where the crossing road is one-way in the wrong direction, or where crash history at the junction makes the manoeuvre unsuitable. It applies to every vehicle unless a supplementary plaque says otherwise, and it is enforced as a moving violation. The red ring and slash visually cancel the black arrow, which is the standard grammar for prohibition signs across the whole system.

How it gets misread

Drivers sometimes read it as banning only turns during busy periods, or believe that a U-turn followed by a right turn is somehow covered. Others treat it as not applying when a traffic signal shows green. The prohibition stands on its own, at all times, for all left turns at that location.

What to do

Do not turn left here. Plan your route to arrive at the destination from a direction that does not need the prohibited turn, or continue to the next junction where a left is allowed and rejoin from there. Turning right instead and looping around via side streets is usually quicker and always safer than negotiating the restriction.
