Warning signs
T intersection ahead
Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site
What it means
This sign warns that the road you are on ends at a junction with a crossing road, forming a T. Your movement at the end of your road will be a left or right turn, or a stop followed by one, and traffic on the cross road may not need to slow for the junction at all. The sign buys you the distance to slow down, choose a lane and look for a gap, which matters most where the cross road is fast and the side road you are on is short or gives a poor view of it.
How it gets misread
The common error is not realising the road genuinely ends, expecting it to continue as a minor street past the junction. Another is assuming the cross road traffic will always be controlled by a sign; many T junctions give priority entirely to the cross road.
What to do
Begin slowing while you still have straight road, move into the correct lane for the turn you intend to make, and signal early. Approach the end of your road expecting to stop or yield, look both ways along the cross road, and commit only when a gap large enough for your vehicle and its acceleration is actually there.
