Warning signs
Two-way traffic ahead
Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site
What it means
This sign warns that you are moving from a one-way or divided roadway onto a section where traffic flows in both directions in adjacent lanes. It is easy to drive a stretch of one-way or divided road and have your mind settle into the comfort of never meeting an oncoming vehicle in your immediate space; the sign exists to break that comfort before the transition. It is common where a divided road narrows, where a one-way pair ends, or where a bridge carries traffic both ways.
How it gets misread
Drivers sometimes assume the sign is for opposing traffic rather than for them, or believe it marks a lane that is two-way. It describes the whole roadway ahead and applies to every user of it.
What to do
Position your vehicle fully within your own right-hand lane and keep it there, watching for oncoming vehicles drifting wide at curves. At night, dim your high beams the moment an approaching vehicle is close enough for its light to matter, and expect other drivers to be adjusting to the same change you are.
