Colorado DMV Permit Practice Test 10
Set ten is the confidence builder. It is weighted toward the easier end of the question pool and it covers the rules that every driver is expected to know cold: what a solid yellow line means, when to signal, how far ahead to check before changing lanes, what to do at a stopped school bus, and the basic requirements for lights, tyres, brakes, and mirrors. If you are early in your studying, take this set before the harder ones so that the fundamentals are settled first. If you are near the end and you are scoring below twenty out of twenty-five here, do not book the appointment yet, because these are the questions the state considers non-negotiable. The explanations are shorter than in other sets, which is deliberate: these rules are simple and you should be able to state them without reading a paragraph.

Question 1 · Road signs · easy
What single visual feature distinguishes construction and maintenance signs from every other category of road sign?
- A They always state a reduced numeric speed limit
- B They are purely advisory and may be ignored when no workers are visible
- C Their fluorescent orange background, used nowhere else
- D They are the only diamond-shaped signs in the system
Show the answer and why
C is correct. Orange is reserved exclusively for temporary traffic control, so the colour alone tells a driver two things before a single word is read: the road ahead...

Question 2 · Road signs · easy
Two solid yellow lines are painted down the centre of a two-lane road. What do they mean?
- A Passing is not allowed from your side of the road only
- B The lane ahead ends and traffic must merge
- C A bicycle lane begins at this point
- D Passing is not allowed from either direction
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Centre line markings are read like this.

Question 3 · Safe driving · easy
You enter a stretch of dense fog on a rural highway. Which headlight setting is correct, and why?
- A High beams, to project as much light as possible into the fog ahead
- B Hazard lights flashing while driving at normal speed
- C No lights at all, to preserve your night adaptation
- D Low beams, because high beams reflect off the fog droplets and create a wall of glare that reduces your own visibility
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Fog is a cloud of water droplets, and high beams feed it: light hits the droplets and scatters straight back at the driver, producing a glowing white cu...
-
Question 4 · Alcohol and drugs · easy
What does Colorado's express consent law mean for a driver who is lawfully arrested for impaired driving?
- A The driver may refuse any test without consequence
- B By driving on Colorado roads the driver has already consented to a chemical test of breath or blood, and refusing carries licence consequences
- C The driver may choose which test to take, but only after a court hearing
- D The driver must give written consent at the scene before any test may be given
Show the answer and why
B is correct. Express consent is a condition attached to the privilege of driving rather than a decision made at the roadside.
-
Question 5 · Speed limits · easy
You turn into a residential street in a Colorado town where no speed limit sign is posted. What limit applies?
- A Whatever speed feels safe to you, provided you can stop for children
- B There is no limit where no sign is posted
- C Half the limit of the road you came from
- D The statutory default for residential streets applies, the same figure posted in most signed residential zones in town
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Where no limit is posted, the law supplies one: the statutory speed for that class of road applies, and residential streets carry the same default figur...

Question 6 · Right-of-way · easy
You are reversing out of a perpendicular parking space in a busy supermarket car park and a car drives past behind you along the aisle. Who is required to yield?
- A The moving car, because you signalled your intention to reverse
- B Neither, because private car parks are not governed by right-of-way rules
- C You, because a reversing vehicle must yield to traffic using the travel lane
- D Whoever moves first establishes the right of way
Show the answer and why
C is correct. A driver moving in reverse is responsible for the safety of the manoeuvre and must yield to traffic using the aisle as a travel lane.
-
Question 7 · Emergencies · medium
One of your front tyres fails suddenly at highway speed. What is the correct immediate response?
- A Grip the wheel firmly, ease off the accelerator, and wait before braking gently
- B Steer sharply for the shoulder immediately
- C Accelerate briefly to stabilise the vehicle
- D Brake firmly straight away to bring the car under control
Show the answer and why
A is correct. A failed front tyre pulls hard toward its own side and adds heavy rolling drag, and neither problem is fixed with violence.
-
Question 8 · Safe driving · easy
A sharp curve ahead carries an advisory speed plaque below the warning sign. When should you slow to that speed?
- A Only if another vehicle is coming the other way
- B In the middle of the curve, once you can judge how sharp it is
- C Before you enter the curve
- D As you exit, to steady the car
Show the answer and why
C is correct. Braking shifts weight onto the front tyres and eats grip that the steering needs, which is exactly the trade you cannot afford once the car is already t...
-
Question 9 · Safe driving · easy
You are driving at night and meet an oncoming car with its high beams lit. What should you do?
- A Switch to low beams and look toward the right edge of your lane
- B Flash your lights repeatedly until they dim theirs
- C Leave your own high beams on so you can still see the road edge
- D Pull onto the shoulder and stop until they have passed
Show the answer and why
A is correct. Two sets of high beams do not cancel out — they blind both drivers at once, and whoever recovers slower is steering two tons of car they cannot see the...

Question 10 · Right-of-way · easy
You and a driver approaching from your right both come to a complete stop at the same instant at an intersection where every approach has a stop sign. What does the rule require of you?
- A You must let the driver on your right proceed first
- B Whoever has the larger vehicle proceeds first
- C You may proceed first because you are already positioned to go straight
- D You must flash your headlights and wait for the other driver to acknowledge you
Show the answer and why
A is correct. When two vehicles stop at the same time at an all-way stop, the vehicle on the right goes first.
-
Question 11 · Licence rules · easy
You move from Colorado to another state and become a resident there. What must you do about your driver licence?
- A Keep both licences so you can drive in either state
- B Wait until the Colorado licence expires and then renew it by mail
- C Surrender it and apply for a licence in your new home state within that state's deadline
- D Nothing, provided the Colorado licence is still valid
Show the answer and why
C is correct. A driver licence belongs to the state where you actually live, not simply to the state that issued it.
-
Question 12 · Safe driving · easy
Before reversing out of a driveway onto a street with foot traffic, what is the safest way to establish what is behind your vehicle?
- A Reverse quickly so the vehicle spends the least possible time in motion
- B Sound the horn for several seconds before beginning to move
- C Trust the reversing camera and parking sensors to cover the whole area
- D Turn your body and look directly through the rear window, using mirrors and camera only as supplements
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Direct vision beats every sensor, which is why the core backing technique is to turn and look through the rear window while the car moves, letting mirro...

Question 13 · Road signs · easy
A white rectangular sign bearing black lettering is posted at the roadside. What is this sign doing?
- A Warning of a hazard ahead that calls for caution
- B Showing destinations, distances and directions
- C Marking a temporary detour around construction
- D Regulating traffic — it states a legal requirement such as a speed limit
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Colour carries the category before a single word is read, and black on white means regulation.
-
Question 14 · Speed limits · easy
You are driving through a school zone during arrival time with children walking nearby. What does the law require of you?
- A Keep the normal limit because no child is actually crossing yet
- B Slow to the posted school zone limit and obey any crossing guard
- C Sound the horn so children move out of the way
- D Stop completely until the area has cleared
Show the answer and why
B is correct. School zones carry a reduced posted limit that applies when children are present or during the hours printed on the sign, and the governing idea is that...
-
Question 15 · Speed limits · easy
You are stuck behind a slow vehicle on a two-lane road and a passing zone opens. May you exceed the posted limit briefly to complete the pass?
- A No; the posted limit is a maximum even while passing
- B No; passing is prohibited on all two-lane roads
- C Yes, provided the pass is completed within a reasonable time
- D Yes, if you flash your headlights at the vehicle being passed
Show the answer and why
A is correct. Speed limits are ceilings, not baseline speeds with a passing allowance on top.
-
Question 16 · Right-of-way · easy
You approach an intersection where the traffic light is green, but a police officer standing in the middle of the junction is signalling you to stop. What must you do?
- A Follow the green light, because signals always take precedence over gestures
- B Obey the officer's direction; a traffic officer's instructions override signals and signs
- C Stop, then proceed on the green regardless of further gestures
- D Sound your horn and wait for the officer to wave you through
Show the answer and why
B is correct. When a traffic officer is directing traffic, the officer's instructions replace the signals and signs for everyone at that junction.
-
Question 17 · Vehicle equipment · easy
Before moving into the lane to your left on a multi-lane road, what is the most reliable way to confirm the lane is clear?
- A Check the inside rear-view mirror only
- B Rely on the vehicle's blind-spot warning light if it has one
- C Signal for three seconds and then move over
- D Glance over your left shoulder to check the blind spot after using the mirrors
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Mirrors leave a wedge of road beside and slightly behind the car that no lens can reach, and that wedge is large enough to swallow a motorcycle or a sma...

Question 18 · Alcohol and drugs · easy
What standard applies to a driver under the age of 21 with respect to alcohol before driving in Colorado?
- A The same limit as adult drivers applies from age 18 onward
- B Under-21 drivers are held to an essentially zero-tolerance standard: any measurable amount of alcohol can cost them their driving privileges
- C Under-21 drivers may consume alcohol if a parent is in the vehicle
- D No alcohol standard applies until a driver holds a full licence
Show the answer and why
B is correct. Because the drinking age and the driving age do not overlap, Colorado applies a zero-tolerance rule to drivers under 21: rather than the adult per-se th...
-
Question 19 · Right-of-way · easy
You arrive at an uncontrolled four-way intersection at the same moment as a driver on your right. Neither street has a stop sign. Who must yield?
- A The driver on your right must yield, because the left side always has priority
- B You must yield to the driver on your right
- C Whichever driver is operating the larger vehicle
- D Whichever driver signals a turn first
Show the answer and why
B is correct. At an uncontrolled intersection where two vehicles arrive at essentially the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
-
Question 20 · Road signs · easy
You are stopping at a stop sign but no stop line has been painted on the pavement. Where must your vehicle come to rest?
- A Before the crosswalk if one is marked, and otherwise before entering the roadway being crossed
- B With the front wheels resting on the near edge of the travelled lane
- C With the front bumper just over the crosswalk, so you can see traffic coming
- D Anywhere within a vehicle length of the sign itself
Show the answer and why
A is correct. The painted line is a convenience rather than the legal boundary.
-
Question 21 · Alcohol and drugs · easy
Which statement correctly reflects what counts as roughly the same amount of pure alcohol?
- A A bottle of beer contains half the alcohol found in any other drink
- B A regular beer, a standard pour of wine and a single measure of spirits are close to equivalent
- C Spirits always contain far more alcohol per serving than beer can
- D Wine barely counts, because it is mostly water
Show the answer and why
B is correct. The standard-drink concept exists because servings differ dramatically in volume while carrying nearly identical amounts of pure alcohol.
-
Question 22 · Vehicle equipment · easy
When are you required to have your vehicle's headlights switched on?
- A From sunset to sunrise, and whenever visibility drops below a safe distance ahead
- B Whenever your dashboard illumination comes on
- C Only on unlit rural roads after dark
- D Only when it is dark enough that you cannot see other vehicles clearly
Show the answer and why
A is correct. Headlights do two jobs that are worth separating: they let you see, and they let everyone else see you.
-
Question 23 · Licence rules · easy
A Colorado law enforcement officer stops you for a traffic violation and asks for your documents. Along with your driver license and vehicle registration, what else must you be able to show?
- A The vehicle's original title document
- B A current emissions inspection receipt
- C Your social security card
- D Proof of financial responsibility, such as a current insurance card
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Colorado expects a driver to produce three things during a lawful stop: a valid driver license, current vehicle registration, and evidence of financial...
-
Question 24 · Road signs · easy
A red octagonal sign with white letters is posted ahead of you. What does it require?
- A Stop only when another vehicle or a pedestrian is present
- B Come to a full stop at the stop line, then proceed only when the way is clear
- C Do not enter, because the road ahead is closed to you
- D Slow down and yield to traffic already in the intersection
Show the answer and why
B is correct. The octagon is reserved for one message only: stop.
-
Question 25 · Emergencies · medium
Your right-side wheels drift off the pavement onto a gravel shoulder while you are travelling at highway speed. What is the correct first response?
- A Brake firmly and steer back onto the pavement immediately
- B Accelerate briefly to pull the car away from the edge of the road
- C Ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel steady, and steer back once the car has slowed
- D Steer sharply to the left to get back onto the pavement at once
Show the answer and why
C is correct. The instinct to yank the wheel back is the single most dangerous reaction to a shoulder drop.
