Colorado DMV Permit Practice Test 8
This set is built around the rules that govern the licence itself rather than the act of driving. Expect questions on instruction permits, who must be in the car with you and where they sit, how long a permit has to be held, supervised driving hours, what happens after a suspension or a conviction, when a vision test or a knowledge retest is required, and which documents the state asks you to bring to an appointment. These questions are unglamorous and they are also the ones people walk into the office unprepared for, because they feel like paperwork rather than driving. If you are under eighteen, pay particular attention: the graduated licensing rules in this set apply to you and not to the adult sitting next to you. Check the dates on any rule you memorise here, since the legislature changes this area more often than it changes the driving rules.

Question 1 · Right-of-way · hard
A lane down the centre of the road carries a solid yellow line on the outside and a broken yellow line on the inside. What is this lane for?
- A A reversible through lane whose direction depends on the hour
- B High-occupancy vehicles during peak hours
- C Left turns by traffic travelling in either direction — never for passing or through travel
- D Emergency vehicles making their way along the centre of the road
Show the answer and why
C is correct. This is a shared left-turn lane, and its layout is the message: a broken line facing each direction of travel, with a solid yellow boundary along each o...

Question 2 · Licence rules · easy
Your licence expired at the end of last month and you have not renewed it. What is the status of your driving privilege?
- A Valid for a grace period of indefinite length
- B The licence must be renewed before you drive; once expired, the privilege to drive has lapsed and driving on it is unlawful
- C Valid as long as the vehicle's registration is current
- D Valid if you carry the expired card, since the document proves you passed the tests
Show the answer and why
B is correct. A licence has an expiry date because the privilege is time-limited by design, and when it lapses the permission to drive lapses with it until renewal.
-
Question 3 · Right-of-way · easy
You and a driver approaching from your right both come to a complete stop at the same instant at an intersection where every approach has a stop sign. What does the rule require of you?
- A You must let the driver on your right proceed first
- B Whoever has the larger vehicle proceeds first
- C You may proceed first because you are already positioned to go straight
- D You must flash your headlights and wait for the other driver to acknowledge you
Show the answer and why
A is correct. When two vehicles stop at the same time at an all-way stop, the vehicle on the right goes first.
-
Question 4 · Licence rules · medium
Under Colorado's distracted-driving law, what is the general rule about holding and using a mobile phone while driving?
- A Phones are prohibited only on interstate highways
- B Texting is prohibited but holding the phone for calls is permitted
- C Phones may be used freely at any speed provided the driver keeps one hand on the wheel
- D Holding and manually using a phone while driving is prohibited; use is limited to hands-free operation, and holding the phone even at a red light counts as driving
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Colorado's distracted-driving rules draw the line at the hand: a phone in the driver's hand is a violation in itself, and the operating definition of 'd...
-
Question 5 · Licence rules · easy
A Colorado law enforcement officer stops you for a traffic violation and asks for your documents. Along with your driver license and vehicle registration, what else must you be able to show?
- A The vehicle's original title document
- B A current emissions inspection receipt
- C Your social security card
- D Proof of financial responsibility, such as a current insurance card
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Colorado expects a driver to produce three things during a lawful stop: a valid driver license, current vehicle registration, and evidence of financial...
-
Question 6 · Safe driving · medium
Another driver cuts you off, gestures angrily, and then begins following you closely. What is the safest response?
- A Slow slightly and gesture back, so they know you are not intimidated
- B Do not respond, avoid eye contact, and head for a public place or police station if they keep following
- C Brake firmly to discourage the tailgating
- D Pull over immediately and settle it verbally
Show the answer and why
B is correct. Nothing you can do by way of reply improves this situation, and several available replies make it worse.
-
Question 7 · Emergencies · medium
You are the driver in a collision in which another motorist appears to be injured. What does the law require of you at the scene?
- A Stop immediately, remain at the scene, and call for emergency help; do not move a seriously injured person unless leaving them creates a greater danger such as fire
- B Drive to the nearest police station to report the crash in person
- C Leave your details on the other vehicle's windscreen and drive on
- D Move the injured person to the roadside first, then call for help
Show the answer and why
A is correct. A crash with injuries carries three absolute duties: stop, stay, and summon aid.
-
Question 8 · Right-of-way · medium
You are driving on a street that comes to an end where it meets a wider through road, forming a T junction. There is no signal, and the cross road carries steady traffic. Who has the right of way?
- A You do, because you arrived at the junction first
- B Whoever is going faster has priority at unmarked junctions
- C You do, because turning traffic always yields only to oncoming vehicles on the same road
- D The traffic on the through road, and you must yield to vehicles travelling in both directions on it
Show the answer and why
D is correct. When your road ends at the junction with another, the through road keeps its priority: drivers on it have no reason to expect your vehicle to enter, slo...
-
Question 9 · Speed limits · medium
A driver holds exactly the posted 45 mph limit through a heavy snowstorm in which visibility has dropped to half a block. Which statement is correct?
- A Perfectly legal, because the posted limit is the only speed rule there is
- B Still unlawful, because the basic speed law requires a speed reasonable for the conditions actually present
- C Required, since going slower would obstruct the traffic behind
- D Acceptable until something actually gets hit
Show the answer and why
B is correct. Posted limits describe a maximum under good conditions, not an entitlement.
-
Question 10 · Safe driving · medium
Late at night you realise you cannot remember the past several kilometres and your eyes keep closing. What is the only effective countermeasure?
- A Keep the interior light on and take a different route
- B Turn the radio up and open the window
- C Stop somewhere safe and sleep — nothing else reverses fatigue at that stage
- D Drink an energy drink and push on to the next stop
Show the answer and why
C is correct. Fatigue is not a mood that can be distracted away; it is a state of the nervous system.
-
Question 11 · Right-of-way · medium
On a steep narrow mountain road with no room for two vehicles, an uphill driver meets a downhill driver. Which one has the right of way?
- A Neither — both must abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot
- B The uphill driver, because restarting on a steep grade is far harder and less controlled
- C The downhill driver, because gravity makes backing down safer
- D Whoever is carrying more passengers
Show the answer and why
B is correct. The rule favours the driver heading uphill, and the reasoning is entirely about who can recover afterwards.
-
Question 12 · Emergencies · hard
On packed snow, you enter a corner slightly too fast and the front wheels slide straight ahead without responding to the steering wheel. What is the correct recovery?
- A Turn the wheel further in the direction of the corner and add throttle to pull the front through
- B Ease off the accelerator, hold or slightly reduce the steering angle, and wait for the front tyres to regain grip before steering more
- C Brake hard and hold the pedal down until the car slows into the corner
- D Shift into neutral and let the car run through the slide unsteered
Show the answer and why
B is correct. A front-wheel skid — understeer — is the front tyres asking for more grip than the surface has, usually because speed is asking for cornering and brakin...

Question 13 · Alcohol and drugs · medium
Two drivers drink the same number of standard drinks over the same evening and end up with noticeably different blood alcohol concentrations. Which factor best explains the difference?
- A Nothing explains it — the count of drinks settles the concentration
- B Only a difference in personal tolerance can explain it
- C The type of drink matters most, since spirits absorb faster than beer
- D Body composition, sex and whether they ate change how concentrated the alcohol becomes
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Blood alcohol concentration is a ratio: alcohol divided by the body water it can dissolve into.
-
Question 14 · Speed limits · medium
You are merging onto an interstate using the acceleration lane. What should you be doing along that lane?
- A Build speed to match the traffic flow, then merge into the first safe gap
- B Signal and push into the lane to make a gap appear
- C Stop at the end of it and wait for a gap to open
- D Merge at the speed you arrived with, whatever that is
Show the answer and why
A is correct. An acceleration lane has exactly one job: to let you reach the merge point already travelling near the speed of the traffic you are joining.
-
Question 15 · Road signs · medium
You arrive at an intersection where the traffic signal is showing a steady flashing red light in every direction. What does a flashing red require?
- A Stop completely, then proceed when the way is clear, treating the junction as an all-way stop
- B Stop and remain stopped until the signal returns to normal operation
- C Treat it as a flashing yellow and slow to half speed through the junction
- D Proceed through with caution, because flashing means the signal has no authority
Show the answer and why
A is correct. A flashing red converts the intersection into a stop-controlled one: every driver stops fully, then proceeds in turn when no conflicting traffic or pede...

Question 16 · Alcohol and drugs · easy
Which statement correctly reflects what counts as roughly the same amount of pure alcohol?
- A A bottle of beer contains half the alcohol found in any other drink
- B A regular beer, a standard pour of wine and a single measure of spirits are close to equivalent
- C Spirits always contain far more alcohol per serving than beer can
- D Wine barely counts, because it is mostly water
Show the answer and why
B is correct. The standard-drink concept exists because servings differ dramatically in volume while carrying nearly identical amounts of pure alcohol.
-
Question 17 · Vehicle equipment · easy
After a flat, you fit the compact temporary spare from the boot. What is the correct way to treat this spare tyre?
- A It performs better than a standard tyre in rain and can be kept until it wears out
- B It is a normal replacement and can stay on the car indefinitely
- C It is a short-range, reduced-speed stopgap: get the standard tyre repaired or replaced promptly and avoid high-speed or long-distance running on it
- D It may be run at any speed provided the flat tyre is in the boot
Show the answer and why
C is correct. The compact spare is engineered to a single job: move the car a short distance at reduced speed so the real tyre can be fixed.
-
Question 18 · Alcohol and drugs · medium
A driver who feels impaired decides to drink strong coffee, take a cold shower and get some fresh air before driving home. What actually happens to their blood alcohol?
- A It continues to fall only at the body's fixed rate, roughly one standard drink per hour
- B It stops changing entirely until the driver sleeps
- C It rises briefly and then drops below where it started
- D It falls faster, because caffeine and cold accelerate metabolism
Show the answer and why
A is correct. Nothing available at a kitchen table changes the rate at which the liver clears alcohol.
-
Question 19 · Licence rules · hard
Intermediate licences for young drivers restrict the number of teenage passengers they may carry. What is the evidence-based reason for this restriction?
- A Because a young driver's crash risk rises sharply with each teenage passenger in the vehicle, due to distraction and risk-taking influence, so the restriction removes the amplifying factor
- B To reduce wear on family vehicles used by teenagers
- C To ensure young drivers learn routes before carrying passengers
- D Because teenagers cannot legally be insured as passengers
Show the answer and why
A is correct. The passenger restriction is one of the most direct translations of crash research into licensing law.

Question 20 · Licence rules · easy
A driver holds a standard Colorado car licence and wants to ride a motorcycle on public roads. What does the law require first?
- A Only insurance on the motorcycle
- B Only a one-day training course, without any test or endorsement
- C A motorcycle endorsement or licence obtained by passing the motorcycle knowledge and skills tests, because a motorcycle requires competencies a car licence does not certify
- D Nothing beyond the car licence, which covers all engine-powered vehicles
Show the answer and why
C is correct. Operating a motorcycle demands a different skill set from driving a car — balance at speed, different braking physics, lane positioning, and vulnerabili...

Question 21 · Vehicle equipment · hard
During a winter storm, a mountain interstate corridor is placed under an active traction law for passenger vehicles. What does compliance generally require of a standard two-wheel-drive car?
- A Nothing; traction laws apply only to commercial trucks
- B Adequate snow tyres with sufficient tread, chains, an approved alternative traction device, or all-wheel/four-wheel drive with appropriate tyres — ordinary summer tyres on two-wheel drive do not qualify
- C Driving at any speed with hazard lights activated
- D Waiting until the law is lifted, because no passenger car may proceed at all
Show the answer and why
B is correct. Colorado's mountain corridors operate a graduated code system in winter, and when a traction law activates, passenger vehicles must demonstrate actual g...

Question 22 · Road signs · hard
Beneath a railroad crossbuck at a crossing, a small rectangular plate displays the number 2. What does this supplementary plate tell the driver?
- A Trains here travel at two times normal speed
- B The crossing was inspected two years ago
- C The crossing is two miles from the nearest town
- D There are two tracks at this crossing, and a train on one can hide a train on the other
Show the answer and why
D is correct. The number plate under a crossbuck states how many tracks cross the roadway.
-
Question 23 · Speed limits · medium
A minimum speed is posted on the interstate you have just joined, but a mechanical fault means your car cannot sustain it. What is the right response?
- A Keep to the right lane and press on regardless
- B Sound the horn so faster traffic knows to go around you
- C Use hazard lights, take the next exit or pull fully off the roadway, and get the fault repaired
- D Nothing — minimum limits bind commercial vehicles only
Show the answer and why
C is correct. Minimum limits exist because a large speed differential is itself a crash mechanism.
-
Question 24 · Safe driving · medium
On an urban street, a coach tells you to keep your eyes moving and to look well down the road rather than at the car directly ahead. What is the practical reason for scanning far ahead?
- A It buys you decision time, so hazards and changing conditions are seen early enough to respond smoothly instead of braking late
- B It is required so that you never need to check your mirrors
- C It improves fuel economy by encouraging steady low speeds
- D It lets you drive faster, because you can see traffic lights change earlier
Show the answer and why
A is correct. Looking far ahead converts driving from reaction into anticipation.

Question 25 · Safe driving · hard
You are waiting to turn left and see a motorcycle approaching in the opposite lane, apparently some distance off. What is the safest judgement?
- A Sound the horn and then complete the turn
- B Turn promptly so the rider has plenty of time to brake
- C Treat the gap exactly as you would for a car and turn now
- D Wait — a motorcycle is narrower than it appears and its closing speed is harder to judge than a car's
Show the answer and why
D is correct. Motorcycles defeat distance perception in two separate ways at once.
