You hold an instruction permit and are practising driving. What must be true of the person supervising you?
- A A licensed driver aged 21 or over must ride in the seat beside you Correct
- B Any licensed passenger anywhere in the vehicle is sufficient
- C A parent must be somewhere in the car
- D Another permit holder may supervise you
Why A is correct
The condition is about supervision rather than mere presence, which is why the supervising driver has to be beside you and meet an age and licence threshold rather than simply being along for the ride. From that seat the person can see what you are watching, judge what you have missed, and in a genuine emergency reach for the wheel. Someone in the back has none of that. This requirement sits alongside the rest of the instruction-permit conditions — restrictions on night driving and on carrying passengers come from the same idea. Every one of them is aimed at making sure the first months behind the wheel, when judgement is weakest, are the months with experienced eyes on the same stretch of road.
Why the other options are wrong
- B. Any licensed passenger anywhere in the vehicle is sufficient
- A licensed passenger somewhere in the car satisfies the letter of nothing. Supervision requires proximity to the controls and a clear view ahead, neither of which a back-seat occupant has when something goes wrong in the next second.
- C. A parent must be somewhere in the car
- Being a parent is not the test — being a suitably aged licensed driver seated next to you is. Plenty of parents are not licensed, and plenty of qualified supervisors are not related to the learner.
- D. Another permit holder may supervise you
- A permit holder is by definition still learning and has not been authorised to take responsibility for anyone. Allowing one to supervise another would put the least experienced person in the position of last resort.
On the road
A learner practises in an empty retail lot with a parent in the back seat and a friend up front. Everything feels fine until a delivery van reverses from a blind corner, and the only person who can reach anything is the learner. That distance is exactly what the rule removes.
