Licence rules · easy
You hold a valid Colorado driver licence. What is your obligation regarding the physical licence while driving?
- A Nothing; the licence only needs to exist somewhere in your home
- B You must have the licence in your immediate possession when driving and present it to law enforcement on lawful demand Correct
- C You must carry it only when driving outside your home county
- D A photograph of the licence on your phone fully satisfies the requirement
Why B is correct
The licence is both a permission and a document, and the law requires the document itself to be in the driver's immediate possession while driving — in a pocket, a wallet or the car — and available to show an officer on demand. The requirement is administratively simple and routinely failed: drivers leave wallets in other bags, take the car to the gym with the licence in the gym bag's twin at home, and discover the violation from the citation. The obligation costs nothing to meet and exists because identity and privilege verification is the first step of every lawful stop.
Why the other options are wrong
- A. Nothing; the licence only needs to exist somewhere in your home
- A licence at home is a licence not in possession, which is its own violation regardless of how valid the driving record behind it is. The requirement is possession while driving, not existence while licensed.
- C. You must carry it only when driving outside your home county
- County lines have nothing to do with it. The obligation is the same in your own neighbourhood as in another state: the document rides with the driver, wherever the driver drives.
- D. A photograph of the licence on your phone fully satisfies the requirement
- Digital copies serve some institutional purposes, but the roadside standard is the physical credential. A phone photo depends on a charged phone, an unlocked screen and an officer's willingness to handle your device — none of which the statute promises.
On the road
A gym-to-office switcheroo leaves the wallet in the gym duffel, and the midday stop for a lane violation produces the second question after 'licence and registration': where is it? A warning and a longer afternoon. The fix cost nothing: licence into the car's document wallet permanently, next to the insurance card it pairs with at every stop.
