Licence rules · easy
Your licence expired at the end of last month and you have not renewed it. What is the status of your driving privilege?
- A Valid for a grace period of indefinite length
- B The licence must be renewed before you drive; once expired, the privilege to drive has lapsed and driving on it is unlawful Correct
- C Valid as long as the vehicle's registration is current
- D Valid if you carry the expired card, since the document proves you passed the tests
Why B is correct
A licence has an expiry date because the privilege is time-limited by design, and when it lapses the permission to drive lapses with it until renewal. The expired card in your pocket proves your history, not your current privilege, in the same way last year's insurance card proves nothing about today's coverage. Renewal exists partly to update the photo and the address and partly to let the state verify, periodically, that the privilege remains justified — which is why driving on an expired licence is its own violation, independent of how good a driver you have been since.
Why the other options are wrong
- A. Valid for a grace period of indefinite length
- A grace period, where administrative convenience allows one for renewal processing, is short and defined — it is not an indefinite licence extension, and driving casually past the date is relying on a rule that is either gone or much shorter than the driver assumes.
- C. Valid as long as the vehicle's registration is current
- Vehicle registration is a separate requirement attached to the car. It never substitutes for the driver's own credential, and current plates on an expired licence change nothing about the violation.
- D. Valid if you carry the expired card, since the document proves you passed the tests
- The plastic card is evidence of a past grant, not a standing authorisation. Tests passed years ago do not self-renew; the renewal exists precisely so the state can re-verify the privilege on a schedule.
On the road
A birthday, a busy month, and the renewal slip still under the sun visor in April. The driver books the renewal online for Friday and takes the bus Thursday, rather than discovering at a Friday checkpoint that the deadline was real. The expired card stays in the wallet as a souvenir of a privilege currently on pause.
