Road signs · easy
Nearly entering a ramp, a driver sees a red rectangular sign carrying white lettering and a white bar. What does it mean?
- A The road is temporarily closed further along
- B Proceed slowly, but no left turns are permitted
- C The lane ends ahead — merge to the left
- D Traffic may not enter this roadway travelling in the driver's direction Correct
Why D is correct
Do not enter is among the small number of signs built for instant rejection: red in colour, rectangular in shape, and carrying a prohibition rather than advice. It appears exactly where a driver might mistake something for an entrance — the wrong end of an exit ramp, the wrong side of a divided road — and the failure mode is always head-on. Red communicates the category before anything is read, and shape plus wording supply the detail. Meeting one while already moving, the only correct response is to stop rather than continue.
Why the other options are wrong
- A. The road is temporarily closed further along
- Road closure is communicated through barriers and orange temporary signage. This sign is permanent and says nothing about the condition of the road beyond it.
- B. Proceed slowly, but no left turns are permitted
- Nothing on it carries partial permission. Slowing does not make entering lawful, and there is no version of this sign that permits anything in your direction.
- C. The lane ends ahead — merge to the left
- Lane-end signs are warnings, usually yellow, telling a driver to merge rather than prohibiting movement. Red here marks a prohibition, not a changing road layout.
On the road
A driver follows a satellite navigation instruction onto what turns out to be an exit ramp and meets the sign a moment too late. Red rectangles exist because that particular mistake ends worse than an ordinary wrong turn does. Navigation software has made this specific error considerably more common: reversing out is embarrassing, and continuing is something else.
