Warning signs
Divided highway ends
Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site
What it means
This sign warns that the physical median separating the two directions of travel is about to end, and that you will shortly be sharing an undivided road with oncoming traffic. On the divided section you have been driving with no vehicle approaching in your lane at all; past the sign, that protection disappears and every oncoming vehicle becomes a head-on risk to be managed with lane discipline. The change is easy to miss because the road ahead often looks identical to the road behind.
How it gets misread
A common misread is expecting the divided road to continue and treating the first oncoming headlights as a wrong-way driver. Another is assuming passing is now permitted simply because the road is undivided; the centre line decides that, not the absence of a median.
What to do
Adjust your position to your proper lane and keep your headlights on full beam awareness for oncoming traffic, dimming for them at night as they will for you. Hold your lane firmly through the transition, expect opposing vehicles to appear quickly, and wait for a broken centre line and a genuinely clear view before considering any pass.
