Work zone signs
Road closed ahead
Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site
What it means
This sign states that the road ahead is closed to through traffic and that no route exists past the closure point for you. It is the terminal instruction of the work-zone sign family: where a detour reroutes you, a closure simply ends the road. Closures are imposed for structure failures, flooding, avalanche control, major crashes or construction that removes the roadway entirely. Unlike a lane restriction, there is no behaviour that lets you legally continue, and the physical barriers behind the sign are usually genuine.
How it gets misread
The persistent misread is the assumption that the closure is for someone else, that local traffic or delivery vehicles or determined drivers will be waved through. Occasionally local-access signage qualifies the closure, but absent that, it is absolute.
What to do
Stop and turn at the closure point, using the posted detour if one is offered or reworking your route entirely if not. Do not attempt to pass barriers, follow GPS through the closure or ask the crew to let you through; the closure exists because the road past it cannot be used, and every bypass attempt ends at the same barrier from the other side.
