You are merging onto an interstate using the acceleration lane. What should you be doing along that lane?
- A Build speed to match the traffic flow, then merge into the first safe gap Correct
- B Signal and push into the lane to make a gap appear
- C Stop at the end of it and wait for a gap to open
- D Merge at the speed you arrived with, whatever that is
Why A is correct
An acceleration lane has exactly one job: to let you reach the merge point already travelling near the speed of the traffic you are joining. Everything dangerous about merging comes from the speed differential — traffic arriving from behind at seventy alongside you entering at forty gives nobody time and nobody an escape route. Use the whole length of the ramp to build speed, signal early, check over your shoulder for the blind spot, then slot into the first genuine gap while maintaining your speed.Stopping at the end of the lane wastes the only resource the ramp provides, leaving you to join from a standstill. If the lane runs out first, slow on the shoulder and wait rather than forcing your way in.
Why the other options are wrong
- B. Signal and push into the lane to make a gap appear
- Edging into moving traffic to compel a gap is aggressive rather than skilful. It forcesothers to brake hard or swerve, and the driver least able to yield is usually the truck behind you.
- C. Stop at the end of it and wait for a gap to open
- Stopping where traffic is moving at highway speed is the worst option on the list. You are now asking everyone behind to accommodate a stationary vehicle while surrendering the single advantage the ramp was built to give you.
- D. Merge at the speed you arrived with, whatever that is
- Merging at ramp speed creates a large differential and a blind-spot conflict simultaneously. Vehicles behind you expected anyone ahead to be accelerating toward the flow, and the closing rate gives them almost no time to react.
On the road
A driver creeps along the ramp at thirty-five, reaches the merge point beside a line of traffic doing seventy, and freezes. The cars behind brake hard and swerve toward the shoulder. The driver who used the full ramp length arrives at the same spot already doing sixty-five and slots straight into a gap.
