Regulatory signs
Left lane must turn left
Standard MUTCD design · not an official government site
What it means
This lane-use sign tells you that the lane it overlooks is reserved for left turns. Where a lane is dedicated this way, continuing straight ahead from it is a lane violation and also a physical problem: the lane typically becomes a left-turn pocket separated from through lanes by painted lines, and a driver continuing straight in it will either cross solid lines or find the lane peeling away toward the intersection. The sign exists so the assignment is unambiguous before you reach the point of no return.
How it gets misread
A common misread is assuming the sign describes the intersection generally, so that any lane may turn left. Another is believing that entering the lane late and then continuing straight is a minor mistake with no consequence, when it is both illegal and a common cause of last-second lane changes.
What to do
Commit early. If you need to turn left, move into this lane well before the intersection, signal, and hold your position. If you intend to go straight or turn right, choose a different lane at the first painted indication, not at the last gap, because merging across a turn pocket in the final metres forces everyone behind you to brake.
