Signs are the largest single block of the Colorado test, and they are graded on obligation rather than recognition. Knowing that an octagon means stop is the easy part; the questions ask what a specific sign requires you to do, and they deliberately place two signs with nearly identical artwork side by side. Study the shape and colour system first, because it tells you the category before you read a word: red means stop or prohibition, yellow is a warning about a condition ahead, white and black is a regulation you must obey, and orange appears only in work zones. Then study the pairs people confuse, such as stop against stop ahead, merge against added lane, and the two school signs.
Derecho de paso 5 preguntas
Right-of-way questions are written so that the courteous answer and the legal answer are different options. That is intentional: Colorado assigns right-of-way by rule, and the exam expects you to follow the rule even when another driver waves you through. Work through the hierarchy in order, because most wrong answers come from stopping one level short: first the pedestrian, then the vehicle that arrived first, then the vehicle on the right when two arrive together, then the driver turning left who yields to oncoming traffic. Emergency vehicles and school buses sit above the whole hierarchy, and the questions about them usually turn on whether you must stop versus whether you may simply slow.
Conducción segura 8 preguntas
Safe driving is the broadest topic on the exam and the one where the correct answer is almost always the option that buys more time or more space. When two choices both sound reasonable, prefer the one that slows you down or increases your margin. The questions cover following distance, scanning ahead, skids, hydroplaning, sharing the road with motorcycles and trucks, distraction, and what to do when something on the vehicle fails. Colorado-specific conditions appear here too: sudden weather changes, long mountain descents where brakes overheat, and wildlife on rural highways at dawn and dusk.
Alcohol y drogas 6 preguntas
The impairment questions test understanding rather than arithmetic. You need the legal limit, but the exam cares more about what alcohol does to judgement, why time is the only thing that lowers blood alcohol concentration, and why a prescription or over-the-counter medicine can impair you just as a drink can. Expect questions about expressed consent and the consequences of refusing a test, and expect distractors that sound severe but state something the handbook does not. The pattern to watch for is an answer promising a quick fix, such as coffee, food, or fresh air: every one of those is wrong, and it is wrong for the same reason every time.
Límites de velocidad 6 preguntas
Speed is tested twice over. The first version is numeric: the limits that apply when no sign is posted, the lower limits in school zones and business districts, and the reductions in work zones and on steep grades. The second version gives no number at all and asks what is safe given wet pavement, darkness, traffic, or a curve you cannot see through, and the exam prefers this version because it cannot be memorised. The useful heuristic is to treat a specific number with suspicion when the question never mentions a sign or a zone, because the basic speed rule governs those cases.
Reglas de la licencia 4 preguntas
This section covers the paperwork, and it is the part people walk into the office least prepared for, because it feels like administration rather than driving. Expect questions about instruction permits, who must supervise you and where they sit, how long a permit must be held, supervised driving hours, what a suspension does to your timeline, and which documents the state asks for at an appointment. If you are under eighteen the graduated licensing rules here apply to you specifically. Check the dates on anything you memorise: the legislature changes this area far more often than it changes the rules of the road, and the education requirements shift again in 2027.
Emergencias 4 preguntas
Emergencies and work zones are small blocks on the exam that carry a disproportionate number of missed questions, because they test sequence rather than knowledge. Knowing that you should move over for a stopped emergency vehicle is not enough when the question asks which lane you move to and whether you slow first. The same applies to rail crossings, to a flagger who overrides the posted sign, and to being the first person at a crash where the order of the steps matters as much as the steps themselves. Work zone questions also carry steeper penalties, and the exam will ask you to notice that.
Equipo del vehículo 4 preguntas
Equipment questions are straightforward if you know what the state actually requires versus what is merely good practice. Lights, brakes, tyres, mirrors, windscreen wipers, and the horn all appear, usually as a question about when you must use them rather than whether the vehicle has them. Two areas cause most mistakes: headlight use, where the rule is tied to visibility distance rather than to a clock time, and child restraint rules, where age and weight thresholds are easy to transpose when you are reading quickly under time pressure.

Cinco errores que más puntos cuestan
Tomadas de las secciones del manual que más respuestas erróneas generan en la práctica, con el capítulo del que sale cada una. Ninguna estadística inventada.

1. Treating a four-way stop as first-come-first-served only
The rule has two steps, and people stop after the first: the driver who arrives first goes first, but when two drivers arrive at the same time the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Questions are written so that "I got there first" is not enough information, because the stem deliberately says both cars stopped together.

2. Reading a yield sign as "slow down and go"
A yield sign does not give you the right-of-way; it tells you that everyone else already has it. You slow, check, and be prepared to stop completely, and you only move when the way is clear. The exam tests this by offering "slow down and proceed" as a distractor next to the correct answer about yielding.

3. Assuming a green light means turn freely
A steady green light lets you turn left only after yielding to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians already in the crosswalk. Test writers rely on the fact that drivers over-trust the signal, so the left-turn-on-green question is one of the most frequently missed on practice sets.

4. Believing coffee, food, or cold air sobers you up
Only time lowers blood alcohol concentration. The handbook is explicit that impairment begins with the first drink and that a person can be legally impaired below the per se limit if their driving is affected. Distractor options that promise a quick fix are always wrong.

5. Using a fixed following distance instead of a time gap
A fixed number of car lengths stops working the moment speeds change, which is why the rule is stated in seconds. Count the gap to the vehicle ahead passing a fixed object; two seconds is the floor in good conditions and more is required in rain, snow, or at night.

Preguntas frecuentes
How many questions are on the Colorado permit test?
Twenty-five multiple-choice questions drawn from the Colorado Driver Handbook. You need twenty correct answers to reach the eighty percent passing score.
What score do you need to pass the Colorado driving knowledge test?
Eighty percent, which is twenty out of twenty-five questions. The passing score is set in state rule, not by the testing location, so it is the same whether you test online, at a state office, or at a driving school.
How old do you have to be to get a Colorado learner permit?
Fifteen years old. If you are under sixteen you must also complete driver education first: a thirty-hour course for ages fifteen to fifteen and a half, or either that course or a four-hour awareness program from fifteen and a half to sixteen.
How much does a Colorado instruction permit cost?
The state permit fee is twenty dollars for a REAL ID instruction permit or twenty-three dollars for a standard one. If you take the online @Home knowledge test first, that costs six dollars and fifty cents on the first attempt and seventeen dollars and sixty-five cents on later attempts.
Can you take the Colorado written test in Spanish?
Yes. The knowledge test is offered in English and Spanish only, both in the office and online. If you need another language, you may bring an interpreter who is at least sixteen years old with a valid licence, or ask for an accommodation.
How many times can you retake the permit test?
You can take it as many times as you need, but only twice in one day. Each retake carries a state fee of eleven dollars and fifty cents. If you take paper tests at a third-party provider and fail four, later tests must be taken at a state driver license office.
Do you need an appointment for the Colorado permit test?
Yes, for anything done in person. State driver license offices require an appointment. The alternative is the @Home online knowledge test, which you can take any time, after which you still book an appointment to have the permit issued.
How long is a Colorado learner permit valid?
Three years, or until your twenty-first birthday, whichever comes first. If you are under eighteen you must hold it for a full twelve months before you can apply for a licence.
What happens if a student misses more than half the questions?
Anyone who misses more than fifty percent of the questions on a first paper attempt has to wait until the next day to test again. The limit is written into state rule and applies to third-party testing sites.
Is the online practice test the same as the real test?
No. Practice sets are written from the same handbook the state tests from, but they are not the official questions, and they give you an explanation after each answer, which the real exam does not. Use them to find the chapters you need to read, not to memorise answers.
